North Carolina Central University
Founded in 1910 by Dr. James E. Shepard as the nation's first public, liberal arts school for African-Americans. Now 6,000 students and faculty in 83 majors include an ever-broadening base from all ethnic backgrounds.
56 Georgian Revival-style buildings populate this 103-acre campus which includes the Museum of Art, Law School, and which was home to the 1989 National Division II Basketball Champions. Faculty includes adjunct professors working in Research Triangle Park.

I-85 North (arriving from Atlanta, Charlotte, Greensboro, etc.):
- Take exit #172 (Durham Freeway, Hwy. 147 South/Downtown).
- Follow Durham Freeway for approximately 5-6 miles.
- Take exit #12 (Mangum St./Roxboro St. Downtown).
- Continuing straight, crossing both Mangum St. and Roxboro St .
- Move into far right lane, go to Fayetteville St, turn right.
- North Carolina Central University is less than 1 mile ahead on the left, at the intersection of Fayetteville St. and Lawson St.

I-85 South (arriving from NY, DC, VA, etc.):
- Take exit #177-A (Durham Downtown)
- At end of exit ramp follow signs for Hwy 15-501 Business South (Mangum St)
- Follow for approximately 2 miles, until Mangum St ends at a stop sign
- Turn left onto Lakewood Ave, follow to 2nd traffic light. Turn right onto Fayetteville St
- North Carolina Central University is less than 1 mile ahead on the left, at the intersection of Fayetteville St and Lawson St.

I-40 East (arriving from Memphis, Asheville, Winston-Salem,
Greensboro, etc):
- I-40 East and I-85 North merge in Greensboro, NC.
- When highways divide near Hillsborough, NC, take I-85 North.
- Follow directions for I-85 North as listed above.

I-40 West (arriving from Wilmington, Fayetteville, Raleigh, etc.):
- Take exit #279-B, the Durham Fwy. (Hwy. 147 North).
- Follow Durham Fwy. for approximately 4-5 miles.
- Take exit #12-A, Fayetteville St., turn left.
- North Carolina Central University is less than 1 mile ahead on the left, at the intersection of Fayetteville St. and Lawson St.
